Salmonella infection of the reproductive tract and eggs-main host and pathogen features. Main features of the chicken reproductive tract highlighting host factors that inhibit infection in both the tract and eggs (black). The main areas targeted by Salmonella and mechanisms employed to achieve colonisation are in red. Colonisation of the ovaries or upper oviduct leads to ‘true’ transovarian transmission.
